Are Christians missing out if they don't speak in tongues?

All spiritual gifts from God are desireable, and Paul tells us to earnestly desire spiritual gifts, and in one sense tongues (if used rightly, that is) can be beneficial. My Dad can speak in tongues, although he never has done so in public and uses it privately when praying (Paul mentiones praying in a tongue) while I myself cannot speak in tongues. Instead I believe I have been given the gift of teaching. Paul made it clear though that other gifts, especially prophecy, were to be more desired so that more people could be edified by it. And then going beyond even that, Paul said that yet if he had all gifts and all power, but had not love that he would be nothing. So, as with all of God's gifts there is a level of blessing and working for the kingdom in it, although it is less of a gift that edifies the entire Body of believes than it does the individual.

God Bless,

~Josh

I don't believe so. :-)

How do you know?

I do know because God has given my family a powerful Christian life since we started serving God and Jesus. All good things comes from God. We cannot do anything on our own, the Scripture says.

Perhaps, but Christians ultimately gain nothing if they lie to themselves and others in uttering gibberish.

amen :yes

Christians ought to be cooperating to be a good witness, not the other way around.

Marvelous LOL
The ones who do not speak in tongues, says they are not missing out on something that they have never done.

Do you guys actually care what the Lord says about the benefit ?
Guess not :)

You are abusing and misusing the Scripture.

You should really one day take the trouble to show me the way .But remember to use Scripture that relates to the subject.

Wow, I'm the only one in here so far to have spoken in more than three complete sentences at a time. :)

Cornelius, would you be able to interpret these tongues for me? Do you have the gift of interpretation?

My understanding of 'Tongues' is to help others come to know the gospel regardless of their native language. As God knows what we are thinking, I doubt he is impressed if someone can verbalize thoughts or prayers in obscure mutterings. If those mutterings when translated help spread the Word then that is different.

Does anybody ever think in tongues?

I have prayed for God to use my life, and to give me all I need (any gifts He is willing to give) to do His work. I have never been blessed with the gift of tongues, but I do have the Holy Spirit in my life guiding me, teaching me, comforting me, and giving me joy. If God desires for me to speak with tongues at some point, then it will be for His purpose. I don't believe I am missing out, because I think I have the gifts that God desires for me to have right now to do the work He has called me to right now. I am right where God wants me and do not feel discontented with my portion. The Lord bless all of you.

Cornelius, do you believe tongues is for everyone? Is that Biblical?

I've never spoken in tongues and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything because of it. I truly believe that if the Lord wanted me to speak in tongues, He would provide that ability. If I don't speak in tongues, it is because the Lord has not chosen me for it, not because I don't care about the benefits.

I believe in gifts from God! I believe I am blessed with the spirit of discernment among other things. :-)
