If it is unbiblical...it is a sin to practise it.

The question in the thread title says "If it is unbiblical...it is a sin to practise (sic) it." To be UN-Biblical there has to be something in scripture that condemns it or condemns the principle behind it. If that's the case, then it would be sin. Just because some church leader, man's tradition, or some denominational statement or doctrine says no to something doesn't necessarily make it unbiblical. Also, just because the Bible doesn't happen to mention something doesn't necessarily make that thing unbiblical either. We were never limited to only doing or having things mentioned in scripture.

And then you have the Church of Christ.

Some of the hard line Church of Christ denomination have communion service with only one cup, never play a musical instrument for worship songs, and a few other different things.
Max Lucado is out of just a church as this. They have since shifted out of the hard line stance...but not completely. One service has a band that plays and one service doesn't.
But the OP's reasoning is behind their stance...since it isn't in the Bible they ain't gonna do it.
Some congregations are more off key than on when they sing...but since I sing for money(people pay me to stop) i can't complain.

Then there was the whole makeup on women in the AOG denomination. And Tammy Faye is a great example of why they might be right on this one...but I'm digressing

It's not exactly a great idea to go down that path. People look at ya odd. All talents are gifts from God. Giving back is only right. Giving a gift of the fruit of your hands to God is awesome.

I've been a member of the Church of Christ for 18?years. Started out in a hard right oppressive and downright mean and controlling congregation to what the hard right would call a liberal congregation. Perspective always plays a role in ones descriptive view because to some, we were considered conservative.
At heart, I'm a liberal... And honestly when My wife and I needed our Elders guidance, they came back with secular advice void of understanding or the fundamental principal of reconciliation. They didn't even apply the fundamental principals of Mt. 18 (whole chapter) and they cast judgment based on the testimony of one individual instead of hearing from all parties.

There have been some on this forum who warned me about the churches of Christ. I suppose I needed to learn it the hard way... I won't be going back.

That's the attitude I totally disagree with. Especially since we have and do a lot of things that aren't mentioned in the Bible and even Church of Christ members have and do them. That's where I believe they (an the many others who do this as well) are incorrect, not only in that they claim just because it's not mentioned in the Bible we can't have or do it, but also because they pick and choose which things their ideas on this apply to and which things it doesn't apply to. For me, if God didn't say it's wrong in his word ( or say the principle behind it is wrong), it's not wrong. After that it's simply personal preference and personal preference should never be represented as God's word. We are not God and we do not speak or make decisions for Him. I may like some of their ideas (some hymns just sound so great sung acapella... as long as the singers can actually sing) but I'm not going to believe or tell others that it's Gods will that they do things the way I happen to like them.

Like my mom used to say, the Bible doesn't say anything about brushing your teeth, that doesn't mean brushing your teeth is evil.

So how do we determine which practices are holy and acceptable before God?
I guess a key component is the intention and principle behind the practice. Brushing your teeth is about good hygiene, it affects both others and yourself. The ways to keep ourselves sanitary and healthy have changed over the centuries with the changes of technology and in some cases increased knowledge, but the idea behind the various practices have been the same.

So I'd think unBiblical practices would be either ones that harm others or that involve harmful spiritual practices such as idolatry.

And we have today uncountable cases of biblical stuff (so-called) that are denominationally controversial

Take for instance, the teaching of love your enemy as yourself, which rather some would use the guns, instead.

Yeah, some matters are debatable. I don't think self defense is unBiblical, but seeing as every thread we've had on that in recent times has turned into a long drawn out, and heated, discussion, I'd rather not get into it.

Thank you. There has been quite enough of that lately. If this thread was a veiled attempt to bring that up again, I'm disappointed.

What man deems sin is not always what God would deem sin. Colossians chapter 3 shows us how we are to be in Christ that we remain always pleasing to the Father.
