What does it mean to be "under the law"?

Who's Law? What part of the Law? What is the Law?

The following scriptures are found in the New Testament of the Bible that include this phrase:

Rom_3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Rom_6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Rom_6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
1Co_9:20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
1Co_9:21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
Gal_3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
Gal_4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
Gal_4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Gal_4:21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
Gal_5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Also, how can one be "under the law to Christ"?

And why does Paul place emphasis on "being not without law to God"?

There is a total of six individual questions here, feel free to answer any one of them if not all of them. But please, may I ask that responders please keep clarity by answering the questions one at a time.

I hope that this thread will become a good teaching point for all of its participants.

When one breaks the law, he has a fine to pay! But when one is in Christ (???) he no longer has any use for legalism, huh? It is just... do your thing?
And for sure.... we are trying to work our way to heaven!

Few ones on these boards seem to understand that ALL were not doing their best with Loving CHRIST as He requires. (in the OT)

1Co_9:20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

Do you understand the difference between a Jew and one who is under the law of Moses?

NO I don't. Please explain the difference.

A Jew who is born and raised in Corinth Greece is a Jew, but not under the Law of Moses.

On the other hand, a Gentile is born and raised in Israel, who decides to be a convert, is under the law of Moses.

That is why it is ridiculous to try apply the Law of Moses to gentiles living in Greece.

Or Gentiles living in America.

Hey listen that's cool no problems here with me:thumbsup

While you're expounding can you fix this one for me as well ...

1Co_9:21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

What does that mean? under the law to Christ

1Co_9:20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

1Co_9:20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the (Old Covenant) law, as under the (OC) law, that I might gain them that are under the (OC) law;

1Co_9:21 To them that are without (any covenant) law, as without (any covenant) law, (being not without law to God, but under the (New Covenant) law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without (any covenant) law

law to God = law to Christ = New Covenant

being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,

The same laws that Abraham walked in with Christ.

because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws."

Isaiah says it this way -

1 "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. 2 He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. 4 He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law." Isaiah 42:1-4

Can you guys spell these laws out in detail?

Or is it a free for all?

Just looking for more clarity.

What does that mean? under the law to Christ

In verse 20 we read "the law"
In verse 21 we read "law"
And "law to God" "the law to Christ"

Moses' Law is not the issue to me, it is all about the differences in the Covenants we have agreed to with God. Which contract did you (me) sign?

This would I believe support @Jethro 's view of the workings of faith in Christ and what that produces in our lives.

When you draw near to Him and come to Him, then you need to stay close to Him.

David described this as being within reach of His Rod and Staff.

For thy rod and thy staff comfort me...

A Shepperd's rod or staff was for keeping the sheep from wandering off and getting into trouble, as well a for protecting against predators.

Set yourself apart and consecrate yourself to Him and spend time with Him and learn from Him.

This is the New Covenant way.

as it is written -

But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." Jeremiah 31:33-34

You did not answer my question :( The White House press secretary does this ...

Basically it means resisting the truth of Romans 6.14.

"For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under (OC) law but under grace (NC)."

The Old Covnant was statements of "Ifs" and "thens".
Exodus 19:5
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice andkeep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.

The New Covenant is statements such as....
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace (unmerited favor) you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Hi there Deborah13.

Good post, yes.

What may be unlawful for you may not be unlawful for me.

What does God say to you in your heart and in your mind? When you pray and read the Word what does the Holy Spirit speak to you?

If you're unsure about whether to observe the "not forsaking the assembly" on Sat., Sunday, or any other day, pray about it and believe that the Lord in His grace and mercy towards you, will lead you. It is not my place to tell you what the Lord should be putting on your heart.

Jesus gave two commandments, I'm sure I don't need to repeat them. :)

law=== does- don,ts shall shall not. it only tells you whats wrong. your still in jail under the law. but under grace== Jesus paid the price ==amazing grace my chains are gone i been set free . john 10:10 the abundant life:) ezra 3:16 :thumbsup

Also, how can one be "under the law to Christ"?
This is simple, we have been set free from the law of sin and death, and are to walk in the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus.

Ro 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (TEN COMMANDMENTS)
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

George Muller:

Good verses.

I was thinking also of: 'The letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life' (2 Corinthians 3.6).

Blessings.

Ro 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (TEN COMMANDMENTS)

Brother, the Law of sin and death has nothing to do with the ten commandments.

The Law of sin and death was seen in the garden.

The Law that was violated was disobeying His Voice.

You shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, was the commandment that was transgressed.

Where is this in the ten commandments?

Trying to keep the 10 commandments as a means of salvation violates this very law, which was thousands of years before the ten commandments.
