Body, Soul, and Spirit

You know I can't comment because I just don't know what that is talking about. Job is a very difficult book. Who is talking and did they get it right? Job, one of his three friends, Elihu (sp?), the Lord ? It's kind of a obscure passage, wouldn't you say? For me determining what's in the spirit and what's in the soul is elusive enough without these types of passages.
Sorry.

Hi Deb,

If you'd like a more in depth look at the soul and the spirit there are some audios I could recommend if you are interested. They're from the series that got me reconsidering this topic. The series is called the "Destiny of the Wicked". Audios 2, 3, 4, 18, and 19 deal with the soul and the spirit, however, the entire series is informative.

I'm saying man is a physical being not a spiritual one.

Hi Butch5. God the Father is a spirit. The Father sending us the Holy Spirit to indwell us upon salvation makes us spiritual beings because at the same time we're walking, we are walking in spirit and truth (his spirit). That's the finality of the resurrection, but to obtain the Holy Spirit one must have faith in Christ Jesus to obtain God's Spirit. And that only comes through our faith and his grace. Basically, spirituality is our center being and drawbridge to Christianity. It's what connects the bridge of salvation from humanity to God. - With Love Butch, DRS81.

Hi DRS81,

Thanks for your input. The subject of the thread is not the Holy Spirit but rather the breath of life

What had you meant by 'I'm saying man is a physical being not a spiritual one.'.

My apologies.

This thread is a spin off of the conditional immortality thread. In that thread the issue arose as to the differences between the spirit and the soul. I started this thread at the request of a moderator to further expound my understanding of those terms.

But that doesn't answer why you think we are not spiritual beings. In regards to thread, I believe we are immortal the moment we accept Jesus Christ as savior and by having faith in his resurrection. Whether we sleep in the grave or not, we are still immortal because those that are in Christ will rise first. I would say that's what's most important, the assurance of our faith in Christ. Let Him take care of the rest. - With love, DRS81

I don't think we're spiritual beings based on the creation account given in Gen. 2:7.

If believers are immortal the moment they believe why do they die?

(Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.) If the Lord God comes from God the Father which He in fact is a spirit, then why would we not not have a spirit also? Isn't the breath of life also the spirit of life that comes from God? We die because we live in a fallen and sinful world, but we become resurrected again and immortal through Jesus Christ after death. Even though we die in this lifetime, his promises are kept. We will rise again. - With love, DRS81.

Breath and spirit are translated from Neshamah and Ruach. The breath of life animates the body. What I stated is that the spirit in man belongs to God, it's His. The spirit is not who the man is.

Immortality means one will not die. If believers die I don't see how they could have immortality the moment they believed. I agree they have the promise of immortality, but I don't see how they can have it now.

Ok, so you agree man has a spirit. I don't understand the last part of what you said. If the spirit is a part of man, how is it not part of who he is. Do we not have free will?

They have immortality the moment they believe because of the promise. Immortality can be described in two ways, the (promise) and/or (the afterlife).

Yes, I believe the spirit is God's breath of life that He put in every living thing.

I think I understand what you're saying.

But (Who) he is in the end, is the makeup of (what) he is in the end.

For example: Who he is, is a child of God. What he is, is holy. Holiness is a gift of His Grace.

When I said who and what he is I was referring to the creation of a man. When I said what he is I meant that he is a body formed from the ground and lives by the breath of life. I think who he is as a person is determined by physical attributes and things from his environment.

Rather the believer will attain a state of immortality, not in an of himself, but rather through continually receiving life from God forever.

There's one more thing I wanted to point out. You had showed us how to continually receive life from God, but how do we obtain life from God.

Are you asking how we initially received life from God? If that is the question I would say it is through faith in Christ.

You are correct, faith in Christ is how we receive life. I also wanted to go back to this post here. I have a question. Do you believe immortality is a one time occurrence through faith, or do we have to earn it.

It's an ongoing process performed by God

Is God's breath a Him or an it?
