Water Baptism

Paul was sent to the Gentiles for their conversion.
He probably also baptized, but that was not his primary ministry.
I meant that Jesus said to baptize ... so baptize we must.

It wasn't easy to be baptized by immersion.
In some places water was scarce...
I agree that IF it were that important, certainly someone would have written something.
The ECFs did not believe full immersion was necessary, if not readily available.
And yes, the important baptism is at our salvation...this is when we receive the Holy Spirit.

What about Acts 19:1-6 ?
Didn't Paul baptize?
Yes, Paul baptized new believers in Jesus Christ since those were originally disciples of John the Baptist's by John the Baptist's water baptism unto repentance for the remission of sin.

Infant baptism of sprinkling is not taught but strange how most denomination are doing that.

Most denominations are not sprinkling infant baptism.

Immersion in water is the biblical pattern.

Water baptism is an ordinance for saved believers to follow as His disciples, but I do not believe there is a strict way of having that water baptism.

Agreed, which is why we say the Samaritans of Acts 8, were already saved when they were water baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. Acts 8:12

John 4:1When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

The Lord reminded me and directed me to this scripture for your answer.
I understand this to say that the Pharisees only heard rumors that Jesus baptized more than John, but it was the disciples that water baptized more than John because there were more of them then just one.

The Presbyterian churches that I have grown up in, one in Iowa and the one in Pennsylvania do infant baptism with sprinkling water.

Cannot imagine how water immersion can be done for infants.

Not that I accept infant baptism as Biblical when it is not, but just sharing.

I read verse 2 in the Book of John explaining the truth that Jesus did not baptized any one by water, but only His disciples did.

John 4:1When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

Thanks for sharing.

No need to baptize anyone until they hear the Gospel and believe.

A majority of those who acknowledge the final authority of Scripture believe that—
  • Baptism is a public act of obedience that follows our conversion to Christ by faith in His Gospel message.
  • Baptism demonstrates we have fully surrendered our lives to Christ.
  • Baptism shows that from our hearts we have confessed our lost and sinful condition to God.
  • Baptism signifies that we are confessing our old life is past and that we have been born again into new life in Christ. We have put on Christ in the newness of life.
  • Baptism is a reverential picture of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ our Saviour.

This is from the Jerusalem Bible:

John 4:1 When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had found out that he was making and baptizing more disciples than John though in fact it was his disciples who baptized, not Jesus himself he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.

John’s baptism was for the showing of one who repented of their sins first and then symbolized of actual water that they were made clean again. It was not for the receiving Jesus or the Holy Spirit as Jesus ministry hadn’t started yet and the Holy Spirit was given on the day of Pentecost in the upper room. When Jesus was baptized of John it was to fulfill Gods righteousness in Him to receive Gods power and authority to start His ministry here on earth. Water baptism is an outward appearance to others that you have been made righteous through Christ and have receive the Holy Spirit as we are given Gods power and authority through His grace to be His servants and witness here on Earth as Christ was.

Mat 3:14 But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
Mat 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

Mark 10:39; 16:15,16; Acts 2:38 It is Gods Spirit that was in Christ and which we are now baptized or have received as the disciples did on the day of Pentecost as when Jesus ascended into Heaven the Holy Spirit came down and fell on those who received Jesus and his word. The baptism that Jesus and Peter was talking about was a Spiritual rebirth through Gods word, not water, Luke 3:16, as Peter taught it was through repentance and accepting Jesus and his teachings is when we receive the Holy Spirit.
This is what Smith's Bible dictionary says:

To be baptized for Christ shows an intention to become a true follower of Christ. John baptized with water unto repentance but as a sign of it, perhaps only a sign of their willingness to enroll themselves among John’s followers. Jesus himself did not baptize with water, but with the Spirit and Christian baptism was only instituted after the resurrection when the Lord gave the commission to his apostles to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

Act 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

This verse shows that these men had already received the Holy Spirit, but wanted to be baptized in water also as followers of Christ. So I believe both verses in Acts to be water, but not for the receiving of the Holy Spirit, but an outward appearance to others that they have repented and received the Holy Spirit already.

Smith's Bible Dictionary!
You just reminded me of how we used to study before the internet.....

I agree with you and JLB But I do find the history of infant baptism interesting.

I realized I was a sinner at 12. I knew of Jesus but not as savior.

At 24? I realized Jesus died for our sins. Stood on first baptism.

At 26 I was baptized in the Holy Spirit after a bath as I sat reading the Bible.

John’s baptism: God sent John
Water
Repentance
Believe in the one who comes after me
Jesus will baptise you in the Holy Spirit and fire
Main thing repentance
But
You can preach Jesus based on the words of John
You might even knoe there is a Holy Spirit.
And maybe about fire

Jesus baptism:
Hear and believe good news of Gospel
Receive Jesus as salvation (eternal life)
Receive Quickening Spirit Jesus became

Holy Spirit baptism:
Receive power to be a witness.

Now here is what I see:
There are three main areas of a complete baptism.

The three aspects were progressively revealed.

At no place do I read of waiting till you understand all three aspects of baptism and on one day you get it all in one ceremony.

At 12 I went through a ceremony that declared Father Son Holy Spirit, but what I got was repentance.

At 24 I got Jesus. I was bashful and had no power to witness.

At 26 I got the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit began to lead me into all truth. The Holy Spirit fought my flesh. My flesh fought just about everything at first.

I still await the last trump and the final changes.

We can use all three aspects. Can it happen in three minutes? Sure it can.

Can it take 14 years? It did for me. Did not have to, but it did. Oh and the fire and completing his suffering. There is much more to all this than we usually discuss.

I do believe you've covered it all.
Nothing much left to say!
:nod

The little I wrote just scratched the surface.
Do: when, where, why, what for, who, therefore, how long, how many, which, etc.
On all the aspects, and God can supply answers.

Yes.
We need deep thinkers such as yourself.

How do you feel about some denominations that require a person to be baptized again?
After all, are we baptized into Christ or into a denomination?

I went with a tradition at the time.
Now I find it better to just reveal what I have been given.
Just remove the outer layer and let the Holy Spirit lead the individual.

Water baptism without a true turn from sin is just a bath.
As baptism is in Jesus' name for the remission of past sins, any sins committed after some initial baptism are still held against you.
I am not against rebaptizing after a REAL repentance from sin.

Then baptism is meaningless and of no real spiritual value.

Actually, it is by believing in Jesus Christ is how one receives the remission of sins.

Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

Water baptism got interjected in Acts 2:38 but in context, he was addressing the Jews that had crucified Jesus in unbelief for why repent in verse 38 is to turn from unbelief by believing in Him is how they got the remission of sins too since there is only one gospel.

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

This is the truth in how we all receive the remission of sins by believing in Him because the Gentiles believers had received the promise of the Holy Spirit BEFORE water baptism.

Since there is only one gospel, believers need to read Acts 2 in context since water baptism has nothing to do with the remission of sins like John the Baptist's water baptism but repenting from unbelief by believing in Jesus Christ is.

There is the case of the thief on the cross who repented, the women who was to be stoned for adultery, the women at the well, death bed confessions and even those who are incapacitated that can not be immersed in water. Does this mean they are not saved or born again, no. It means that no dirty river water is going to save anyone, but that it is only a symbol of repentance like that of John the baptist who called those to repent first. There is nothing wrong with being dunked in water, but know that it is only an outward appearance to others of what has already taken place Spiritually within you when you repented, accepted Jesus and was indwelled with the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is not mentioned in John chapter three so why do so many believe we are to be dunked in dirty river water as the water can not bring about Gods salvation, but only by faith do we believe as it comes by Gods grace, Ephesians 2:1-10, as we hear the gospel (word/living water) preached to us.

Why do you believe Jesus ordered the Apostles to baptize?

I agree we are saved by faith...
But then why baptism?
