JoJo's answer about tongues

Now for the much abused scripture :)

1Co 13:8 Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall be done away; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall be done away.
1Co 13:9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part;
1Co 13:10 but when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away.

As much as it looks like knowledge have indeed passed away on this forum,we all know that it is still with us.

So obviously the time for this scripture's fulfillment is not here yet. Now look at WHEN this scripture will be fulfilled:...........when that which is perfect is come,.............. Well, perfection is not here yet.

What will pass away when perfection comes?

............that which is in part shall be done away.............

Oh, I thought wisdom, prophecy and tongues will pass away?

No........that which is in part shall be done away.

Glad to know, knowledge will not pass away ! For a moment there, I saw the world walking into walls with no mind anymore.

I'm afraid too many believe "that which is perfect" has come to their church.

Pretty funny.
Your own posts abuse the scripture to push an error.

While tongues will not be done away with till we see Him 'face to face', tongues is for a purpose and not some random thing like we all see in the charismatic churches who are generally out of control....ie flopping around on the floors like they are having seizures in many services, not to mention the laughing and barking nonsense that started up a few years ago.

Tongues then, is a sign, not for believers, but for those who do NOT believe. It is for a SIGN.
That is what is prophecied about tongues and what PAUL shows it is for.
One can twist that fact all they wish, but it wont change it, Im afraid.
Unless YOU are in need of a SIGN, tongues is of no use to you...which is why Paul says that the other gifts are better, because they actually serve a real purpose in the church, unlike tongues.

OK JoJo, we have covered the part where Paul shows us that the GIFT of tongues is meant for church use and is not for everybody. And we have covered where he tells us about tongues in private which doe not exclude anybody.

Act 10:45 And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

All these people were speaking in tongues as the Spirit came upon them.

1Co 14:18 I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:
Paul would have really been cruel and proud if he said this to a group of Christians where not everybody could speak in tongues. He spoke to the Corinthians as a whole and could say this, because they all spoke in tongues. He was just more aware of the benefit and made sure that he spoke more in tongues than they did. Paul knew it was meant to edify him, and he made full use of it.

The gentiles speaking in tongues was a 'sign' to Jews like Peter that the gentiles HAD been included in this new covenant and WERE partakers of the Spirit as they were.
Did you forget that tongues is for a SIGN to them to believe NOT ?
They were amazed when the gentiles spoke in tongues as it was a SIGN that the gentiles were now included....making sense ? :)

Well at least we have established that you definitely do not speak in tongues :)

I kind of missed the word "sign" in this scripture

Act 10:45 And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Do you prophesy and cast out demons? or has that too passed away?

C

Mar 16:17 And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues;

You dont know me, chap, so do not make assumptions about my walk..that way neither of us ends up looking foolish

huh. I guess if you were looking at more than a couple pet passages you may have read it elsewhere.

This speaks about the prophecy for what tongues is actually FOR. It was FOR a sign to the Jews. Even with that sign they still would not believe.
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
(1Co 14:21-22)
Tongues was a sign to the Jews who do not believe.
It was also used to show a sign that the Counselor had come and that the gentiles were included.

Do you prophesy and cast out demons? or has that too passed away?
Do you actually READ a persons posts ?
I said that it will not cease until we see Him "face to face". But it had a PURPOSE.

Im sorry, where again does that say EVERY person will do those ?
And you conveniently ;) left out the REST of that passage...any reason ?

Here it is....

And these signs shall follow them that believe;
1. In my name shall they cast out devils;
2. they shall speak with new tongues;
3. They shall take up serpents;
4. and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;
5. they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
(Mar 16:17-18
)
Played with any rattlesnakes or drank any Draino lately ?
If not, please dont waste time with that particular passage

I remember when I was just a young Christian, somebody at work came to me . He was in a very traditional church, which never taught anything about the Holy Spirit and the gifts. He told me, he saw something in me, that he wanted, but did no know what it was and how to get it. I told him about the Holy Spirit . This man had never heard anybody speak in tongues.

He asked me to pray for him and young as I was, I was scared and insecure. First I tried to back out of it and told him that I will get a pastor to pray for him, but the Holy Spirit spoke to me at that moment and told me to pray for him. I did, but still unsure about it all.

I remember, he was sitting in a chair in my office and I laid hands on him and prayed. Well, nothing happened (I was expecting this ! LOL ) but all of a sudden he said: I am seeing something (He had his eyes firmly closed, because like me, he was unsure of what was going to happen ) "I am seeing words passing in front of my eyes!"

I asked him, if he could read them aloud. He said yes and started reading and out came tongues. I know that he received the Holy Spirit that day, because from that very moment onward, that man turned around and where he use to be a very shy guy before , he now went out and turned the world upside down with the gospel. He was so on fire for the Lord after that day.

God is amazing

Not even a good dodge, friend.
Do YOU practice these others...or just those that arent dangerous ?

Jesus did not say that ALL would do these things. We can SEE that Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake and lived, thus Christs words were fulfilled. The rest of us are not required to drink poison or play with snakes to fulfill Christs words, nor are we all going to speak in tongues or cast out demons.

Sorry you are correct, it says "them that believe" (it in fact does not say everybody)

My bad.

Then we can assume you drink Draino and let rattlesnakes bit you ?

I believe those scriptures. Part of this scripture, speaks of actions of the believer: Tongues and casting out demons.
Secondly it speaks of protection (not stupidity) Protection from poison and snakes. Paul in fact proved this to be true.
Act 28:3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out by reason of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
Act 28:4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous creature hanging from his hand, they said one to another, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped from the sea, yet Justice hath not suffered to live.
Act 28:5 Howbeit he shook off the creature into the fire, and took no harm.
Please note Paul did not go looking for the viper :)

Tell ya what, C...I'll play the game by your rules for a moment...ok ? :)
So you take those very literally and apply them to the WHOLE body of believers, I assume.
Lets see just how far your willing to take that reasoning and logic, shall we ? :)
Below is VERY clear instruction from our Lord, not unlike your own passage from Mark....lets see if you apply the rules the same when scripture is aimed right in your direction or if the dancing and dodging begins ;)

Jesus says in no uncertain terms and without exception;
(Luk 6:30 KJV) Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
(Mat 5:42 KJV) Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
Now, Im asking you for $500.
Are you going to obey Jesus' words or not ?

(mods bear with me)

Not yet, but if forced, like they did to some Christians in Russia (because of this scripture) God will protect me, like he indeed protected those Russian Christians . I believe the Scriptures.

I speak in tongues, I have casted out demons, so only two more to go LOL

No friend, the passage uses the SAME wording;

2. they shall speak with new tongues;
3. They shall take up serpents

"they SHALL".
So unless you ARE taking up serpents you are simply picking and choosing what you want to believe and trying to force it upon others.
